What is Mammography?
The process of taking a breast film using a specially designed X-ray machine and a low-dose X-ray is called mammography. It is possible to diagnose breast cancer by having a mammogram that does not have any harm.
Early detection of breast cancer saves lives. For this reason, it is useful for women to have mammography with certain periods. It is extremely important to have a mammogram in order to reduce the number of people who die from breast cancer.
Mammography provides the diagnosis of masses that cannot be seen during the examination, and also increases the chances of recovery due to the high chance of intervention against cancer detected early.
How Is Mammography Performed?
A fairly low dose of X-ray is used during mammography and is performed in order to detect very small problems. In order for a full and adequate view of the breast to be taken during mammography, the breast should be thoroughly compressed between the two plates on which the Decoupling will be performed in order to take a full and adequate view of the breast.
The purpose of the compression process applied during mammography is to ensure that the movement of the breast is restricted, as well as to reduce the existing thickness of the breast and to ensure that the shot is performed better.
In addition, breast compression is performed during mammography to ensure a clearer view of the tissues located in the breast and to obtain a better quality result without possible errors.
Mammography Results
After the mammography, the mammography result is not taken immediately and the mammography result report is sent to the doctor who requested the shooting procedure within a period of eight or ten days.
The experience of the radiologist performing the mammography, breast density with the sensitivity of the technique being used, and the experience of the radiologist who performs the mammography sometimes leads to incorrect results during the shots.
A person who thinks that there is any problem with his breast should first consult a specialist doctor about it, and only if the doctor requests, a more detailed examination of the area that may be the problem in the breast can be performed.
The radiologist who performs the mammography procedure makes a report to the doctor who requests a detailed examination about the findings he has seen and sends the report to the doctor. However, according to the prepared report, if a problem is detected, more tests may be requested in this case.
Determination of the Time of Mammography Shooting,
The breasts should not be sensitive when the mammography procedure is performed. For this reason, the period when the breast has the least sensitivity should be preferred.
The period when the breasts are least sensitive is the week after the end of the menstrual period, and just as the sensitivity decreases during this period, the swelling decreases. For this reason, the most accurate time frame for mammography is the week following the end of menstruation.
Things to Consider Before Going to a Mammography Session,
It is a correct option that two-piece clothes are preferred because they should be naked from the waist up during the mammography shoot. Cosmetic products such as powder, lotion and deodorant should not be used during mammography in order not to affect the film badly.
What is Digital Mammography?
In breast imaging, just like with digital cameras, the acquisition of the image in a digital environment with the help of a detector is called digital mammography.
This image, on the other hand, is examined by breast radiologists on screens specially developed for mammography that can process images and, if desired, can be printed on film.
Who is Digital Mammography Recommended For?
Digital mammography is recommended for women who are younger than fifty years of age and have not yet entered menopause or have just entered menopause.
In addition, digital mammography is also recommended for women with dense breast structure because it facilitates the evaluation of the breast and is more successful in detecting breast cancer than standard mammography.
At the same time, digital mammography is also recommended for women who have undergone breast prosthesis or breast surgery and have breasts that have become difficult to evaluate accordingly.
